How To Hand-Feed A Baby Macaw?
After preparing feed and filling it in the syringe, hold the baby macaw to devour its meal without disturbance.
- Hold the macaw head and beak with your hand gently.
- Make sure your fingers are placed around its beak.
- Insert the feeding syringe in the mouth of the macaw and release the stuff slowly and gradually when your macaw shows the response with head pumping.
- Start releasing the feed when you get a response from the macaw.
- Feed it till you end up with the filled feed to avoid any mess.
- Change the syringe for every macaw to reduce the chances of any contamination.
- Cleaning of utensils is necessary after every meal.
When And How Often To Hand-Feed A Baby Macaw?
Soon after birth, a baby macaw is shifted to a safe container with soft bedding, and hand-feeding continues to 3 months when it becomes independent and learns to eat on its own.
Initially, it needs a soft feeding formula for weeks of birth after every 2 hours. After that, it can feed on a slightly thicker feeding formula for about one month after every 4 hours.
Older babies start feeding mashed meat, fruits, or vegetables till weaning.
How To Disinfect Hand-Feeding Equipment?
Hand-feeding equipment should be cleaned and sanitized to avoid any contamination. You can sanitize the feeding syringe in the pressure cooker or give it a cold disinfectant bath.
Simply wash the syringe with fresh water thoroughly to remove the food particles and then allow it to sanitize with hot water.
For cold disinfectant baths, Glutaraldehyde is used, which is very strong and effective.
